MACARTHUR’S KNIGHTHOOD SUSPECTED BY CHICAGO PAPER. AS BAR TO PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 29. “The fact that General Eisenhower also received a knighthood won’t obscure from Americans the object of rendering General MacArthur unavailable as the principal contender against President Roosevelt for the Presidency in 1944,’’ says the Chicago “Daily Tribune’ in an editorial. “President Roosevelt s -British colleagues doubtless want him returned, and he has done what he can to assure that result. Americans do not look kindly on any of their fellows who receive titles, however humble, from foreign rulers. “If General MacArthur receives the title his standing in the eyes of Americans may be serious affected, as General Pershing’s in 'similar circumstances. General MacArthur cannot refuse the badge because to do so would offend the Australians who have followed him with perfect loyalty. Moreover, he said he had no political ambitions, but he may feel differently at the end of the war. He cannot decline the title, but it is to be hoped that Congress will refuse it for him.”
