MEETING OF WAIRARAPA i BOARD PROVISION FOR RURAL RETICULATION. MR A. C. PEARCE RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN. * (“Times-Age” Special.) The chairman, Mr A. Campbell Pearce, presided over the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board, held in Carterton yesterday. There were also present: Messrs J. W. Colquhoun, F. C. Daniell, H. P. Hugo, W. Howard Booth, C. Holmes, N. C. C. Shepherd, W. A. Tate, Geo. W. Hart and the secretary-manager, Mr Geo. Brown. Mr Daniell said the credit balance of £1775 which was shown for the past year’s working should be appropriated and set aside for rural reticulation purposes after the war. Instead of having to borrow for new work the board should ear-mark balances brought forward each year for the purpose he mentioned. In fact he would like to see a fund built up to £lO,OOO for this purpose. Mr Colquhoun seconded the motion which was carried.
It was pointed out that if the money so set aside was urgently needed for other work a notice rescinding the present motion could be brought forward.
It was resolved, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Daniell, to invest £2OOO in the present war loan, that amount to include the £1775 balance referred to. It was decided that the chairman’s honorarium remain the same as that of last year, £l5O. Mr Pearce reported that ’the secre-tary-manager (Mr Brown), the engineer (Mr H. B. Keenan), and himself had attended a conference of power boards at Palmerston North recently. It was a most interesting conference and he complimented the Wairarapa Board on the fact that its secre-tary-manager had been elected to a committee of a board of inspectors to go into matters at a further conference.
It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Tate, seconded by Mr Daniell, that £2OO be allocated for patriotic purposes.
The same members of the finance committee last year were re-elected.
Mr Shepherd moved and Mr Tate seconded, the re-election of Mi’ Pearce as chairman. There being no further nominations he was declared elected amid applause. Mr Pearce expressed his thanks and hoped that with the co-operation of the committee he would be able to do his best for the board as a whole.
A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the secretary-manager, the engineer, workmen and staff generally for their excellent work during the past year. This was especially so as regards the outside staff during the disastrous earthquake of last year.
