GREYTOWN
OBITUARY MR WALTER HENRY DAY, J.P. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred at the Lewisham Hospital, Wellington, early this morning of Mr Walter Henry Day, an old and respected resident of Grey town. The late Mr Day was born in England in 1860 and went to Australia as a young man. Coming to New Zealand shortly afterwards he came to the Wairarapa and worked with the late Mr Sheet as a surveyor. He commenced a store and grocery business in Greytown and carried -this on successfully till four years ago, when he retired.
He was a member of St. Luke’s Vestry and choir for over fifty years. He was a life member of the South Wairarapa Working Men’s Club, a member of the Greytown Bowling Club, a trustee of the Greytown Town Lands Trust, a member of the Greytown Fruit Company, and Chief Ranger of the Foresters’ Lodge. In his early days he represented the Wairarapa at Rugby and was a member of the volunteer force that proceeded to Parihaka.
His wife predeceased him a few years ago. Two sons, Allan, of Turua. and John, with the military forces in New Zealand, will have the sympathy of a large number of friends. Of a kindly disposition he was a great favourite throughout the district, and despite his advanced age ’was active till the time of his death.
VEGETABLE GROWING GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSALS CONSIDERED. There was a full attendance of Wairarapa vegetable growers at a meeting held in Greytown on Wednesday evening. A representative of the Internal Marketing Department outlined the Government proposals to enter into contracts for certain basic vegetables. The meeting, which was not open to the press, closed without any agreement being reached. Both European and Chinese growers were fully represented and many questions were asked. Mr Greggs, of the Internal Marketing Department, was the speaker. Mr W. Wiggins, of the Wairarapa Production Council, was also present.
Ladies’ Golf. There will be a draw for lady members at the Greytown Golf Club's house at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday. Members are asked to be early. TOWN HALL TWO FEATURE PROGRAMME. A laughter-producing programme, which includes two features is to be screened at the Town Hall tomorrow, at matinee and evening performances. “Hayfoot,” an uproarious affair, with William Tracey, Elyse Knox and Janies Gleason, heads the bill and the associate feature is “Niagara Falls,” starring Slim Summerville and Zasu Pitts.
