WAR LOAN CAMPAIGN

CONFERENCE DISCUSSING ORGANISATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ' WELLINGTON, This Day. Methods of securing the support of every section of the community for the forthcoming war loan are being considered by a national conference of delegates called by the War Loan Committee and held in Parliament Buildings. Mr W. F. L. Ward, acting-governor of the Reserve Bank, is presiding. The conference is representative of all parts of the Dominion, which for the purpose of the war loan organisation is being divided into eighteen districts. The general aspects of war finance showing the necessity for an intensive campaign, were given in addresses by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, the Finance Minister, Mr Nash, and the Secretary to the Treasury, Mr B. C. Ashwin.

A feature of these addresses related to the economic background of the war financing, demonstrating the vitally important need for preserving as far as possible a sound balance between the expanding purchasing power and a contracting supply of commodities for civilian use. The effective bridging of this gap would, it was pointed out, prevent inflation, which had its most serious consequences in depreciation of the effective purchasing power of wages and savings. It was evident from the discussions that the war loan committees would make the coming campaign far wider in its personal appeal than in the case of any previous loans, and the conference has begun to consider details of plans to use many avenues of public appeal and a wide variety of organisations. The facts given to the conference by the principal speakers will provide valuable campaigning material, the delegates expressing high appreciation of the addresses. The conference will continue its discussions on practical details of the loan campaign today, and in the evening delegates are to be given the opportunity of hearing the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, present his financial statement to the House of Representatives.
