BOROUGH AFFAIRS PROPOSED NEW FIRE .STATION, (‘•Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council held las. evening. There were also present. Councillors E. McKenzie, W. A. Han, H. Mortenson, L. M. Clark, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey. W. R. Harry, Howard E. Jackson and Miss O. W. Wolters. The treasurer's statement showed a debit balance in the general account of £145 Is lid and a credit balance oi £2OB 19s 5d in the Gas Works account. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote enclosing details of the estimates fox 1943-44. The Carterton Borough Council’s quota was £787. The Deputy Chief Warden, Mr R. W. Roydhouse, reported on the genertu conditions laid down under the latest bulletin dealing with the E.P.S. as regards the Regent Theatre. He gave six recommendations for the quick evacuation of the theatre in case of emergency. He also suggested the appointment of duty firemen for each picture night. If the suggestions recommended were observed the theatre could be effectively and speedily evacuated during an emergency call. Councillor Clark; “Who will be responsible for payment of the firemen on duty?” The Mayor: “It may be met by regulations. Perhaps it would be as well to write to the authorities to see if provision is made for the brigade to be subsidised.”
A vote of thanks was passed to the Wardens’ Committee for its report and it was authorised to carry on with its work.
The Masterton County Council wrote regarding heavy motor vehicle regulations, 1940, and the appointment _of heavy traffic licence fees, suggesting that the quota for boroughs to be .25 per cent and for county councils 75 per cent.
Scoutmaster W. F. Fryer wrote asking permission in the event of the committee securing the old Clareville school building, that it be allowed to remove and re-erect the same as a Scout hall on the present, site of the Scout. Den in Carterton.—The matter was deferred for further consideration. The Clerk’s action in ordering 15 tons of bitumen was approved.
Councillor Clark submitted a plan of the proposed new fire station, which was favourably commented on by councillors. The plans were of a building similar to the Hastings fire station. It was decided that the Works Committee meet officers of the fire brigade and fully discuss the proposed plans. It was decided to place on record appreciation of the services of the Carterton Band for Anzac Day and that a letter of thanks be forwarded to the band. Councillor McKenzie, in proposing the motion, spoke favourably of the capabilities of the band which was principally a boys’ combination.
It was resolved that the trees round the Memorial Park be trimmed back as soon as the sap had receded. A complaint was made concerning* the watertables in the borough on the main highway, and it was decided that the attention of the Public Works Department engineer be drawn to same. The newly appointed inspector was instructed to deal with stray dogs to the limit of the by-law. The Clerk was instructed to serve notice on property owners concerning the growth of broom on roadside frontages to their properties and also on land belonging to them.
Air Training Corps Dance. A dance will be held in the State Theatre tonight by C Flight of the Wairarapa Air Training Corps. Novelty dances will be held. Jack Barnes and his Rhythm Boys will provide the music.
REGENT THEATRE “THE DOCTOR & DEBUTANTE.” Brimful of exciting adventures, “The Doctor and the Debutante,” will be shown at the Regent Theatre tonight. It is one of the Dr. Kildare series, with Lionel Barrymore, Lew Ayres, Ann Ayars and Robert Stirling in the principal roles. Also showing is the “March of Time.”
