BALANCE TIPPED
AGAINST THE U-BOAT ADMISSION BY GERMAN NAVAL SPOKESMAN. EXPLANATION OF REDUCED ALLIED LOSSES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, May 24. Last week was a particularly successful one for the Air Force in its campaign against U-boats, said AirMarshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory, Commander-in-Chief of the Fighter Command, speaking at Windsor. A Nazi spokesman admitted tonight that U-boats were finding attacks on Allied convoys increasingly difficult. The spokesman, Hendrich Echleicht. of the German Naval Commander-in-Chief’s Submarine Headquarters, was explaining the reduction in Allied sinkings by U-boats. He said: “It requires immense daring to take up the cudgels against such a maritime Power as Britain. All the best enemy brains are concentrated on the U-boat menace. New apparatus has made the U-boat’s greatest strength—its invisibility—an illusory advantage. A whole fleet of escort vessels and aircraft has been mobilised. When America came into the war, the balance of power was tipped against us.”
