Three hundred Allied aircraft yesterday pounded Sardinia, wave after wave swarming over the isand from dawn to dusk. When the bombers had finished, Allied Fighters swept over the island. A North Africa communique states: “Yesterday the North African air force sent large formations of heavy and medium bombers and figh-ter-bombers to make attacks on enemy ports and airfields in Sardinia. Flying Fortresses attacked La Maddelena and Terra Nova. Hits were made on harbour installations, warehouses and ammunition dumps, causing explosions and fires. Marauders, escorted by Lightnings, attacked Algthero Airfield, which was completely covered by bombs, hangars being hit and a fuel dump set on fire. Mitchells, escorted by Lightnings, attacked another aerodrome, where much damage was done to dispersed aircraft and bindings. Throughout the day, Lightnings and Warhawks carried out numerous attacks on other targets in Sardinia. In Caloforte Harbour, a supply ship burst into flames. Railroads, industrial plants and barracks were also attacked. “During these operations nine enemy aircraft were destroyed and on Sunday night three enemy bombers were destroyed. Three of our aircraft are missing. A Middle East air communique states: “Yesterday heavy American bombers bombed San Giovanni. Hits were scored on the ferry terminus and railway yard, while at Reggio Di Calabria a tanker in the harbour was hit and set on fire and the ferry terminus received several direct hits. A large fire and explosion were caused in railway yards south of the terminus. At least one enemy fighter was destroyed. All cur bombers returned.'’
