CALM BEFORE STORM

ON THE EASTERN FRONT SOME GERMAN COMMENTS. DIETMAR ADMITS SETBACKS IN KUBAN AREA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 24. “The present phase of the fighting on the Eastern front is an ominous calm before the storm.” declared a German military spokesman. He added that Russia was constantly bringing up reinforcements to the front, especially in the Kuban bridgehead. The Berlin radio’s commentator, General Dietmar, admitted that Soviet attacks in the Kuban area, which were probably aimed at provoking German counter-measures, had resulted in a number of successes for the Soviet. He claimed that the Russians had been unable to change the stalemate along the balance of the front, and added: “We are told the Russians have not been idle during the pause after the winter offensive, but there is reason to believe we will profit from the stalemate, in whijh resources resulting from total mobilisation have been brought to the front.”
