DAMAGE TO WARSHIPS

DENIED BY THE SPANISH AUTHORITIES.

FERROL FIRE ATTRIBUTED TO ACCIDENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 24. A statement by the Spanish Embassy denying that Spanish warships were damaged in the Ferrol fire was broadcast by Vichy radio, which said the fire was caused by accident. A London message published on Saturday said: A huge fire has been sweeping Ferrol, Spain’s largest naval base, for the past two days. It has already destroyed the arsenal and a large part of the Spanish fleet, according to a report broadcast by Berlin radio. This is the only report of the fire issued from the Continent, but the British United Press says that reliable reports reaching London state that two of Spain’s seven cruisers and at least four destroyers are aflame.
