In a message to Generals Eisenhower and Alexander, the Chief of the General Staff of the Soviet Army, Marshal Vassilevsky, sends congratulations on the victorious conclusion of the North Africa campaign and “soldierly greetings to the brave American and English soldiers and officers who utterly defeated and destroyed an enemy of great strength, thereby advancing our common cause, which is to destroy the Hitlerite robbers, together with all their accomplices.’’
Thanking Marshal Vassilevsky, General Eisenhower said the message had been received with enthusiasm by all the troops of the command, and he added: “Throughout the operations wo have followed with unceasing interest and have been inspired by the brilliant performance of the Red Armies. We are sure that the enemy soldiers and material captured and destroyed during this campaign here have definitely weakened Hitler's band of brigands.”
