DONETZ FRONT
RUSSIANS WIDEN THEIR BRIDGEHEAD DURING WEEKEND FIGHTING. POSSIBLE SPRINGBOARD FOR OFFENSIVE. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) I (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) LONNDON. May 23. As a result of weekend fighting the Russians have widened their bridgehead on the enemy side of the Donetz. The Russians at another point on the Donetz front, which according to Reuter, may become a springboard for a summer offensive, outflanked the Germans and stormed and captured a strongooint, and also a commanding height. Fighting has continued at the Lisichansk bridgehead, where the Russians beat off two strong German counterattacks. The “Red Star" reports that the Russian lines were heavily dive-bomb-c'd and shelled, but the Germans failed to advance and lost a considerable number of planes. According to German military circles, quoted by the Berlin radio, the Russians will try to synchronise their offensive plans with those of the British and Americans in other theatres of war.
