A tribute to the Merchant Marine was paid by President Roosevelt _ on ♦ the occasion of National Maritime Day. Mr Roosevelt said the members of the Merchant Marine pushed through, despite perils of submarine, dive-bomber and surface raider, and returned voluntarily to their jobs at sea again and again, realising tnat the lifelines to the battle fronts would be broken if they did not carry out their vital part in this global war. “Their skill and determination,” he said, “will keep open the highway to victory and the unconditional surrender of the enemy.”
