INFANTILE PARALYSIS
IMPORTANT RESEARCH WORK
IN SWEDEN. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) 1 y “ P LONDON, May 22. Scientists of Uppsala University, Sweden, have thrown new light on infantile paralysis by isolating the vehicle which carries the disease, says the British United Press Stockholm correspondWorking with minute quantities of brain matter taken from rats and apes(it took 100 rats to supply the microscopic quantity), the scientists discovered that the disease was carried by a vehicle which lodges in the bowel generally in inactive form. When the vehicle becomes activated it attacks the nervous system and the brain, producing at least partial paralysis. The virus also lives in water, particularly stagnant water, or in swimming pools improperly cleansed. This is believed to be the cause of epidemics. What causes the virus to change from an inactive to an active state is not known.
