ON ITALY AND ISLAND BASES

Allied Attacks Pressed Home Vigorously FORCE OF FIFTY FIGHTERS MET OVER SICILY BOMBERS AND ESCORTS FIGHT THEIR WAY THROUGH LONDON, May 23. The Allied air offensive against Italian ports, bases and airfields is still being pressed home vigorously. Most of the latest attacks have been on Sicily and Southern Italy, but Sardinia also has felt the weight of Allied bombs. Axis resistance on Sicily is growing, but the battering goes on day and night. Fifty medium bombers raided Messina and other targets in Sicily on Friday night. In another raid Wellington’s smashed up runways, buildings, dispersal areas and ’other objectives in Sicily and a few hours later Flying Fortresses added to the havoc, damaging barracks and destroying a number of aircraft on the ground. They were met by a force of at least 50 enemy fighters and after a stiff fight, the Fortresses and their Lightning escorts fought their way through and shot down seven Axis fighters. Warhawks were over Sardinia again yesterday. A radio station was hit. Fighters and fighter-bombers were active over Sardinia, Sicily and Southern Italy. Malta-based aircraft were also busy, attacking airfields, factories and railway communications.
