ENEMY CONVOY
ATTACKED BV NAVAL PLANES IN SICILIAN NARROWS MOTOR VESSEL SET ON FIRE. TRAIN BLOWN UP IN SOUTHERN ITALY (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.5 p.m.) RUGBY, May 21. A R.A.F. communique issued in Malta states: “Last night naval aircraft attacked a convoy between Pantelleria and Marettimo. Four direct hits were obtained on a motor-vessel, which burst into flames. “Long-range fighters attacked and blew up a train in Southern Italy and a Junkers 52 was shot down in the sea off Pizzo. “Last night our intruders scored hits on motor vessels south-west of Cape Granitola, in Western Sicily, an escorting boat being set on fire." “Fighters and bombers attacked Comiso, fires being started in the aerodrome .area.” For the first time since last December, bombs were dropped on Malta today in an early morning raid. A supplementary communique states that about 36 Focke Wulf fighter-bombers, with an escort of Messerschmitt 109 s, took part. Our fighters intercepted the raiders before they reached the coast and broke up their formations. A few bombs were dropped on the island, causing very slight casualties. Two Focke-Wulf 190 s were shot down by our fighters and several Focke-Wulf 190 s .and Messerschmitt 190 s were damaged. TARGET FOR BOMBS DAM NEAR SARDINIA’S SECOND CITY. (Received This Day, 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, May 21. The dam in Sardinia on which the Strategic Air Force dropped three bombs is ten miles eastward of Assari, which is Sardinia's second city. It lies at the head of the north-western coastal plain.
