LIME PIT PROPOSAL (To the Editor) Sir, —In your issue of yesterday I am reported (with reference to the Abbotsford lime pit project) to have protested against going over the same ground as at the Langdale meeting. This statement is incorrect. The facts are, I suggested that nothing further be done with the proposed scheme until the council called another meeting at Langdale and put before the ratepayers the estimated demand for lime to be used in the Uriti Riding and also details as to the contractor or company who would operate the pit, together with the approximate price to be charged and any other information that would enable the ratepayers to be reasonably certain that the project would be successful. —I am, etc., CHAS. SCHOOLS & SPELLING (To the Editor.) Sir, —May I voice a complaint as to the way students are being turned out of schools with practically no knowledge of spelling? I have recently met examples from foui' different primary schools and two different secondary schools. The students had each had “three years’ commercial” and their spelling was shocking. As instances I have seen allserated (ulcerated), stumoch (stomach), ruffly (roughly), solister (solicitor), and sheering (shearing). Forty years ago, when the revolt against Latin first started, a leading educationalist stated that if Latin were not taught it would be most difficult for teachers without a knowledge of Latin to teach spelling. Apparently he knew what he was talking about. —I am, etc.,
