Telephone for Blacksmith.

The Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union has decided to make representations to the Post and Telegraph Department to have a telephone put on at the residence of the Unions blacksmith. It was pointed out that he was doing work for farmers outside of the Union in addition to Union work and the lack of a telephone made matters most difficult for farmers who wished to get in touch with him. 1800-Acre Vegetable Garden. An area of 800 acres near the Patumahoe railway station has been obtained by the Government on lease for the duration of the war, and will be used for the growing of vegetables for the armed forces. It is the largest property yet acquired by the Government in the. Auckland province for this purpose. The land is being prepared for cultivation which, it is hoped, will be commenced next month. A substantial portion of the vegetables for the armed forces produced during last season in the province came from seven areas, totalling 663 acres, the largest being at Ruakura, 100 acres, and Mangere, 160 acres. The Patumahoe scheme will be similar to these. Esperanto. The ordinary weekly meeting of the Masterton Esperanto Club was held last night at No. 8 Short Street. Mr E. J. Esler presided. It was reported by one of the members that he had recently seen reference to the fact that following the first World War useful work had been done by Esperantists in tracing missing prisoners-of-war and others who had difficulty in returning to their native countries. Those who were familiar with the intensive nature of the international esperantist organisation could readily understand how well fitted it would be to perform this useful service. The evening of study and reading was concluded by a conversational halfhour led by the president.
