ATTU BATTLE
LACK OF OFFICIAL NEWS BUT CONFIDENCE EXPRESSED ' IN WASHINGTON. TOKIO TALK OF FORCES. OUTNUMBERED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON. May 17. Though official news is still lacking about the American invasion of Attu Island, in the Aleutians, official circles in Washington are confident of early victory. Only one communique has been issued since the island was invaded last Tuesday, and that merely stated that fighting was in progress. Observers accept the absence of communiques as suggesting that fog and other adverse weather conditions have halted the air and sea support for the Americans. But all believe that the battle continues ashore against the Japanese, who are dug into rocky crevices which abound on the island. In contrast to the confidence in Washington,' broadcasts from Tokio appear to be preparing the Japanese public for bad news, saying that their troops on Attu * are outnumbered. ■
