TIRE CONTROL

APPOINTMENT OF LOCAL OFFICER. URGED BY FARMERS’ UNION. At its meeting yesterday the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, decided to urge that Mr R. W. Kebbell, chairman of the Wairarapa Primary Production Council, be appointed as recommending officer for the issuing of permits for the purchase and retreading of tires by farmers and others in the district. Mr L. T. Daniell said farmers were not represented on the control committee in Wellington. He considered the Production Council should handle the control. Mr Kebbell said the committee in Wellington did not know local conditions. Production had to be raised this year and the drought and labour shortage had to be faced. Wheat had to be produced and tires had to be available for production purposes. The “swivelchair experts in Wellington” retarded production in withholding tires for farm work. Mr Kebbell considered tires were available. Mr J. L. Heckler: “They haven’t got any sense in Wellington. I applied for two retreads and received a reply weeks later that I could not get new tires.” Mr W. J. lorns alleged serious overcharging by some firms doing retreading work and asked the Primary Production Council to watch farmers’ interests in that matter. •
