BEY OF TUNIS
DEPOSED BY GENERAL GIRAUD. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, May 16. An official announcement in Algiers says: “After having investigated on the spot the situation created by the liberation of Tunisia, General Giraud has recognised that in the present conditions the presence of the Bey of Tunis, who reigned during the occupation by Axis troops, would prejudice the external and internal security of the regency undertaken by France as the protector. The Commander-in-Chief therefore has decided that he must be succeeded by another of the same dynasty. According to the tradition of the dynasty, Sidi Lamine Bey will become his successor.” The French Resident-General in Tunisia will be present today at an investiture of the new Bey of Tunis. The former Bey has already left Tunisia for a new residence. The Associated Press correspondent in Algiers says that the deposed Bey went to Madagascar with 25 of his wives.
