OBITUARY MR WILLIAM FRIEND KNOWLES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred at the Greytown Hospital yesterday afternoon of a very old and respected pioneer settler, Mr William Friend Knowles in his 82nd year. The late Mr Knowles had been in indifferent health for a long time, but he had only recently entered the 'Greytown Hospital. Born in Christchurch in 1361, as a child he moved with his parents to Nelson and the Hutt Valley, and at the age of eight years , his parents and family took, up their restdence in Kuratiwhiti Street. Greytown, after which they resided at Matarawa. He worked on the Woodside-Carterton railway when the line was being built and helped to fell the bush through which the railway line ran. He later was employed at practically all the early sawmills in the district, principally Gallon's, Price's, Chew’s and Stevens’s. Fifty years ago he purchased a farm in the Dalefield district, part of which his son. Maurice, still occupies. In his early days Mr Knowles was a member of the Dalefield School Committee. He married a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs George Gaskin. She died 25 years ago, during the influenza epidemic. Four sons and three daughters are left to mourn his death. .They are Messrs George (Christchurch), William E. (Belvedere), Leonard (Ponatahi), and Maurice Knowles (Dalefield), and Mesdames IC. McPhee (Carterton), C. Yule (Apitil and L. Rogers (Dalefield). There- arc 24 grand- ‘ children. , , He was a keen football and hockey enthusiast and was a vice-president of the Carterton Football Club and Dalefield Hockey Club for several years. On one occasion he travelled with the Wairarapa representatives on a tour to Invercargill and to Napier. The funeral will take place at the Clareville Cemetery on Monday, after a service at the late residence, Dalefield, commencing at 1.30 o’clock. WEDDING PRICE—ANDERSEN. The marriage took place recently at the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Citerton, of Coralie Anita, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Otto Andersen, Lower Valley, and James Llewellyn, youngest son of Mr and Mrs E A. Price, Kaiwaiwai. The Rev. W J. Couling officiated. The church was beautifully decorated with flowers by friends of The bride, escorted by her father, wore a gown of pink silk velvet cut on fitting lines and a full length pink silk net veil, which was lent bv her cousin, Mrs A. Reffin, was held in place by a coronet of orange blossom. The bride wore a crystal necklace, and a gold brooch worn on the heart-shaped neckline of her frock had previously belonged to the bridegroom’s grandmother. The bride’s bouquet was of white and pale pink carnations, nerines and chrysanthemums. Miss Amy Anderson (friend) and Miss Margaret Andersen (cousin) the bridesmaids. They were dressed alike in frocks of nalo green sheer over taffeta cut on the same lines as the bride's. Their frocks and matching halo headdresses were trimmed with pale pink velvet flowers. Their bououcts were of pink carnations, nerines, maidenhair fern and autumn leaves. The bridegroom’s gifts to the bridesmaids were chain necklets. . . „ . The duties of best man were carried out. by Mr R. Benton (Featherston) and Mr D. G Haste (Carterton) was groomsman. On leaving the church the bride was presented ~ with a silver and pink horseshoe by little Matireen Reffin. At the i-eception, held at the Masonic Hall, the guests were received by Mrs Andersen, who was wearing a rust frock and haf, with accessories to match and a shoulder spray of autumn tints. The beautiful two-tiered wedding cake was made by Mrs Oscar Andersen, the bride s aunt, and was iced by Mrs W. McGregor When the bride and groom left foi their honeymoon the former was wearing a clovercoloured frock with navy coat and hat and accessories to match. Parcel Evening. A parcel evening and dance held in the Belvedere Schoolroom last night in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Muriel (Polly) Zabell was well attended. A most enjoyable time was spent to music supplied bv Miss Mary Herrick, assisted by Mr A R Daysh on the accordion. Mr A. E Reid was an efficient M.C. Extras were nlavc-d by Misses B. James and I. Thomas and Mr A. R. Daysh. Two Monte Carlo waltzes were held and were won by Mrs Geo. James and Mr A. R. Daysh and Misses B. James and P. Jensen. Mr A E. Reid, on behalf of those present, asked Miss Zabell to accept the many useful gift parcels which she did amid applause. Mr A. E. Carter returned thanks on behalf of his fiancee. REGENT THEATRE “BAHAMA PASSAGE.” Madeleine Carroll and Stirling Hayden are featured in “Bahama Passage,” showing m at the Regent Theatre tonight. The film is in technicolour. The story deveops along an arresting love theme,
