DUISBURG BLASTED
IN HEAVIEST RAID OF WAR EVIDENCE OF GREAT DAMAGE ENORMOUS EXPLOSIONS HEARD. SMOKE BILLOWS TWO MILES HIGH. LONDON, May 13. A thundering regiment of' four-engine Ii.A.F. bombers dropped over 1500 tons of bombs on Duisburg last night in the heaviest raid of the war. Duisburg is the world’s biggest inland port. It is also a great railway junction and industrial centre. The weight of bombs dropped was more than that which devastated 600 acres of Cologne in the 1000 bomber raid last year. Last night’s attack on Duisburg was packed into 45 minutes. The whole of the city and its port were covered in dense smoke, billowing up two miles high. The fires could be seen 150 miles away. Many of the crews report, hearing enormous explosions. This was Duisburg's 60th raid. The last was little more than two weeks ago, when nearly 1500 tons of bombs were dropped. Thirty-four bombers are missing.
