NAVY LEAGUE

MASTERTON BRANCH MEETING. DISTRIBUTION OF CLOTHING TO SEAMEN. A well-attended meeting of the Masterton Ladies ’Auxiliary of the Navy League was held yesterday, Mrs S. R. Gawith presiding. Reference was made to the death of Miss Gray, who had been for many years a vice-president of the Navy League, members standing in silence as a mark of respect. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs H. K. Mclntosh in the death of her mother, Mrs Prendergast Knight. It was reported that 15 garments had been purchased in April and forwarded to the Seamen’s Mission.

The wool committee reported that three local men had been supplied with woollen comforts during April, and 29 garments were packed for transport to Wellington. Letters of appreciation and thanks were received from five men who had received outfits of woollens. Copies of letters, received by the Wellington Navy League from the Navy League Seafarers’ Comforts Supply in London, and from the New Zealand High Commissioner, were read. The letters gave details of the distribution of clothing received from New Zealand, and of the work being done to assist seamen by providing and equipping hostels in ports abroad, and supplying games and musical instruments for ships. They assured the Navy League War Council that every contribution received was being used in the interests and welfare of seamen.

As a result of a resolution passed at the annual meeting to endeavour to obtain more members, 13 new members were enrolled. It was reported that one life member had been enrolled since the last meeting, and that the Bideford School had enrolled 100 per cent membership in the League and had gained its flag.
