MAURICEVILLE
COUNTY AFFAIRS BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon, the chairman, Mr. E. W. Cheetham, presiding, there being also present: Councillors A. Forsbeig. A. Gray, J. H. MacDonald and O. Welch. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor D. Bennett. The treasurer's report, which showed a credit balance of £1062 15s 9d, was adopted. Accounts for £497 Os 8d were passed. The chairman was authorised to make application for Main Highway and Public Works grants for subsidies for the current year prior to the date of the next meeting. In discussing the estimates for the current year, councillors referred to the necessity of building up reserves for the subsequent purchase of move modern plant and machinery, and for the renewal of motor lorries. Owing to the progressive increase in costs over the past few years, to the increase in hospital levy, and to the increase in costs of maintenance of county roads and bridges due to earthquake anci flood damage, it had not been possible to build up such reesrves, and after full consideration, councillors agreed that an increase in the rate of one-eighth of a penny in the £1 would be recommend! ed. The estimates therefore were based upon such an increase, which in the aggregate would bring in the sum of £3ll 17s.
It was resolved that the annual meeting of the Council be held at the County Office, Mauriceville, on Monday, June 14, at 11 a.m.
The chairman was appointed delegate to the County Conference, to be held in Wellington in July. A letter was received from the City Librarian, Wellington Central Library, in regard to the 1943 Victory Drive. It was resolved that the co-operation of the local branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and the Women’s Institute be sought in this matter.
Mr Cheetham reported that steps were being taken to complete repairs to the Cleland’s Road Bridge. It was reported to the council that stock were being , allowed to graze on roads in the County in large numbers, and it was resolved that prosecutions would have to be made to rectify th? matter.
The clerk was instructed to take action in regard to outstanding rates.
