MASTERTON PARK CLUB ANNUAL REPORT. YEAR'S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. The thirty-first annual report of the Masterton Park Bowling Club, to be presented at the annual meeting to be held on Monday, May 24, states, inter alia:— “The 1942-43 season has been a most successful and enjoyable one. The weather during the greater part of the season was ideal for bowling and the greens played perfectly. Keen interest was displayed in the various competitions, which resulted as follow:—Champion singles. H. M. Smith: cliampion pairs, H. Duckworth. R. Jenkins Js) ; champion fours. P. Trevorrow, E. Brown, G. Erown, H. M. Smith Is)-; Thompson Cup, G. Brown; Spackman Cup, J. Griffiths and J. A. Heath (equal) ; Crafts Medals. S. Lee, D. Wallis, C. Andrews. R. H. Simpson (s); Keatley Medals. W. Garard. J. G. Shearer (s); McEwen Ferns. C. Moore, A. E. Kilgour (s); Ewington Feathers. C. Moore, A. E. Kilgour (si; McKenzie Buttons, P. Trevorrow, E, Brown, G. Brown, H. M. Smith (s).

“Inter-club games for the Wall Cup, Kelly Cup, Mutrie Cup and Veteran’s badges provided interesting competitions during the season. The three former trophies are held by this club. Unfortunately, no challenges were received for the Bell Shield. The first contest for the Davie Memorial Cup between Ihe Masterton and Park clubs was most enjoyable, and was won by the Masterton Club. A series of weekend pairs tournaments proved very popular. Trophies for these events were kindly presented by Mr P. M. Smith and were won by leads J. Heath and skips A. E. Kilgour. Two contests, New Zealand v. Overseas, were very enjoyable and were won by teams representing New Zealand. Several inter-club visits between the Masterton and Park clubs were arranged and were very popular. It is hoped that these visits will be continued in future.

“It is with very sincere regret.” states the president. Mr A. Osborne, “that I have to record the death of one of our most popular members, the late Mr J. C. Ewington, who was a member for many years. Before his death, Mr Ewington was able to witness some good contests for the Veteran’s badges, which were kindly presented by him. It is pleasing to record a substantial increase in membership. Although some of the new members are old players the majority are colts and a number of them displayed considerable ability as the season progressed. Your committee is endeavouring to encourage returned service men from the present war to take up the sport and thus assist in their rehabilitation. One of these men, Mi- H. Stimpson, has obtained considerable pleasure through his association with us, and is proving his ability as a bowler. I have to extend the thanks of the club to Messrs J. Coe for his donation of a motor, to Mr H. Stimpson for his gift of a clock, and to Messrs J. McKenzie and P. M. Smith for donating trophies. “The autumn top-dressing of the main green has been completed, and with favourable weather conditions the green should be in excellent playing condition next season. In this connection I wish to thank those members who have done valuable work on the greens and also to fittings in the pavilion. Negotiations have again been opened with the Borough Park Committee in an endeavour to obtain improved pavilion accommodation, and it is hoped that satisfactory results will be obtained. The balance sheet shows that the finances of the club continue in a sound condition. The usual end-of-season bowlers’ dinner was held and proved a great success. Your club was well represented at this function. I wish to thank the various officers and members of the committee for their support and co-operation during the year. To members generally I wish to express my appreciation for the kindness and consideration extended to me. Thanks are also due to Mrs C. Andrews for her assistance, the Park Custodian and staff, and to the Press for publicity so freely given.”
