The Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, Prime Minister, left Wellington yesterday for Christchurch.
Sergeant Guy Duckett, on furlough from overseas,. is staying with his parents at Rangitumau. Mrs F. Munro, of Apiti, is staying with her mother, Mrs K. E. Blake, of Hacker Street, Masterton. Mr A. E. Clemas, Cole Street, Masterton, has received cable advice that his son, Trooper C. Clemas, of the Middle East Forces, is safe and well.
Mr and Mrs B. R. Seddon and Mr J. Crossen, of Auckland, are spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs B. J. Seddon, of Lincoln Road, Masterton.
At the Napier Competitions held recently Daniel Davey, of Masterton, was second in the song and dance and the character tap dance sections. The engagement is announced of Daphney Lorraine, eldest daughter of Mrs Menzies and the late Mr Raper, Petone, to Fredrick Kieth, third son of Mrs and the late Mr F. Gourlay, Masterton.
Among a list of members of the Second N.Z.E.F. mentioned in dispatches is Private E. A. Thornton; next-of-kin, father, Mr T. M. Thornton, care of Mrs Neville Armstrong, Park Road, Carterton. Lieutenant-General E. Puttick, General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces, is to attend the jubilee' celebrations of the Waitaki Boys' High School, of which he is a former pupil. The celebrations begin on Saturday, May 15.
Mr H. S. Claughton, who has recently completed 25 years’ service in Nelson Cathedral as organist and choirmasteh, received a presentation from the dean of the cathedral, the Very Rev P. B. Haggitt, on behalf of the parishioners last week. Mrs G. A. Robinson, who has recently returned from Dunedin, is spending a short holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs S. Holdsworth, Sussex Street, Masterton, before commencing duty at the Karitane Hospital, Featherston. The Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, is at present visiting the Maori settlements of the Wairarapa. Services have been held at Homewood, Greytown and other parts of the district. Bishop Bennett is accompanied by the Rev. H. Taepa, of Masterton.
Reference to the excellent service rendered to the county by Mr F. W. Parry, a former member of the Mauriceville County Council was made at yesterday’s meeting of the council by the chairman, Mr E. W. Cheetham and others. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives, members standing in silence as a mark of respect.
The death has occurred at Wanganui of Mr Frank Mackie, aged 65 years. Arriving in New Zealand from Lancashire about 32 years ago, Mr Mackie settled in Wanganui, and later resided in Wellington, returning to Wanganui in 1936. He took a keen and active interest in all kinds of amateur sport, being prominent in soccer, cricket and bowling.
The funeral of the late Mrs C. Prendergast Knight, of Te Whiti, took place yesterday. The service at St. Matthew’s Church was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich and that at the Crematorium, Karori, by the Rev. L. N. Watkins, Vicar of Wadestown. There was a representative attendance at St. Matthew’s Church. A large number of wreaths were in evidence, among them being tributes from the members of the Ranfurly Club, Masterton, and the directors of the W.F.C.A., Ltd.
