AIR ATTACKS
ON JAPANESE IN PACIFIC AMERICANS ACTIVE IN MANY AREAS. DIRECT HIT ON DESTROYER. (British Official Wireless.! (Received This Day, 12.35 p.m.) RUGBY, May 9. A United States communique states: “Liberators on Thursday night attacked Japanese positions at Kahili, in Nauru Island and the Ballalai Islands, in the Shortlands area. On Thursday morning Dauntlesses attacked several Japanese destroyers in the vicinity of Gizo Island, in the New Georgia group. A destroyer was directly hit by a thou-sand-pounder and several near hits were observed. On the same morning. Avengers and Corsairs bombed and strafed Japanese positions in Munda, New Georgia.”
