VOLUNTEER WORKERS
AMERICAN RED CROSS SERVICE CLUB. POLICY REGARDING MEALS FOR WORKERS. A meeting of volunteer workers of the American Red Cross Service Club was held in Masterton on Saturday. Mrs Guy Williams presided. Two members of the Marine Corps, Sergeant R. Brainard and Corporal William Wilson, expressed appreciation to the volunteers for the work they were doing for the service men. Mrs Studholme said more volunteers were needed, and a more regular attendance was desirable. Volunteers for Sundays were specially needed. The club director, Mrs Betty Learmont, stated that there had been a revision of the policy of providing free food to volunteer workers. The Wellington Club had been faced with the problem of providing meals, etc., for hundreds of volunteer workers. The club had recently gone into the matter and had decided that if free meals were given to hundreds of workers, the American Red Cross would not be expending the money, which was held in trust, for the purposes that it had been given. However, tea and toast would be given, and a full meal would be given to those workers who went without a break for a meal on certain shifts. Mrs Learmont thanked volunteers for their services, and said that the club knew it could not carry on without the co-operation and help rendered by the community. It was stated that the Sunday tea dances were most successful, and would continue to be held in the future.
