NEW THREAT
TO ALLIED POSITIONS IN. BURMA. JAPANESE ASTRIDE ROAD. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 8. The Delhi joint communique covering operations in Burma states that the enemy east of Mayu ridge secured a position astride the road four miles west of Buthidaung. They also, despite substantial casualties, succeeded in reinforcing forward units, thereby directly threatening our positions. R.A.F. planes yesterday attacked troops and supply dumps in the Mayu Peninsula. Beaufighters were on the offensive over- the Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers. Bombers attacked Mandalay and Abyab. All our planes are safe.
The U.S.A.A.F. communique from New Delhi says that heavy bombers again attacked the Namtu mines on Thursday. A violent explosion and fire were observed in a smelter plant. Medium bombers hit rail installations at Sedaw between Mandalay and Lashio. Medium bombers yesterday dropped 13 tons of bombs on a bridge 25 miles west of Mandalay. Heavy bombers dropped 27 tons of bombs 'bn Toungoo, also destroyed one .enemy fighter and damaged another. Our fighters attacked with bombs enemy positions 17 miles north-east of Myitkyina. One of our reconnaissance planes is missing.
