The Rev Father J. Buist, C.S.S.R., Wellington, is at present conducting a 10 days’ retreat for the community of St Bride’s Convent. The engagement is announced of Lesley Carissa, only daughter of the late Mr and Mrs R. Vennell, Carterton, to Private James Charles, third son of Mr and Mrs W. Tilyard, Masterton. Mr J. P. Farrell left this morning for Christchurch as delegate representing the Masterton branch at the annual conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute, which is celebrating its diamond jubilee. The engagement is announced of Joan Gwendolene, only daughter of Mrs J. Ryan and the late Mr W. E. Wright, Masterton, to Gunner William Stanley, third son of Mrs and the late Mr H. Nicol, Patutahi, Gisborne. The death ocurred on Wednesday last at Karori, Wellington, of Mrs Alice Constance McKnight, widow of Mr R. M, McKnight, who, before his death a decade ago, was manager in Palmerston North of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. Mrs McKnight, who was 77 years of age, was formerly Miss Powell, of Wanganui.
