Orders in Council. From 1936 to 1942 a total of 1709 Orders-in-Council were issued, as against 346 Acts of Parliament passed, said Mrs T. R. Barrer at a meeting of the women’s section of the National Party in Masterton yesterday. Mrs Barrer contended that the power of Parliament was being rapidly superseded. . Mutton & Lamb Schedules. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board advises that the ewe schedule in the North Island will be increased by l-8d per lb from Monday. In the South Island the lamb and ewe schedule will be increased by l-8d per lb and the wether schedule by ]d per lb from Monday.

Woman’s Death. That deceased met her death by suicide when she threw herself over a cliff into the Hautapu River while in a state of depression following the death of her husband six months ago, was the verdict of the coroner, Mr E. Loader, J.P., at an inquest in Taihape into the death of Mrs Rita Jean Jacobsen, nee Buckeridge (Masterton). The coroner added an expression of sympathy with the Jacobsen family. Mrs Jacobsen, senior, had acted as a mother to deceased.

Damage to Hotels. An amendment to the Licensing Act Emergency Regulations issued with the Gazette this week extends the provisions of the regulations to cover earthquake or similar damage. The regulations made provision for a waiver of the regulations relating to accommodation previsions at hotels in the event of war damage. The amendment provides for cases where guest accommodation has been destroyed by earthquake or other causes and cannot be restored because of war conditions.

Guilty of Assault. The plea that Stuart Wallis Grame Vane Walker, milk roundsman, aged 32, was bluffing when, saying that he was going to kill his children and himself, he placed his infant daughter in a bath of water, was put forward by his counsel in the Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday when he was charged with. attempting to murder the baby, or, alternatively, with assaulting it. During a 10 minutes’ retirement, the jury found him guilty of assault only.

Animal Husbandry. One hundred farmers, their sons and employees, have enrolled in the animal husbandry and veterinary classes to be held under the auspices of the Hawera Technical High School, at the Egmont A. and P. Association showgrounds from May 17 to 23. But for a limit having to be set to the numbers accepted, the total would have reached 150. There will be nine specialist demonstrators in addition to two assistant lecturers and the chief lecturer and demonstrator, Mr A. Leslie, F.R.C.V.S., Eltham.

Soldiers Sentenced. Two soldiers who deserted after they had been warned for active service and so missed their drafts for overseas, were each sentenced to 18 months’ jail with hard labour by district courts-martial for desertion on active service. They were Privates Graham Trevor Lamb and Adrian Christopher Tansey. Gunner George John Cleary was sentenced to 90 days’ detention for desertion. Driver Thomas Mervyn Perkins, found guilty of disobeying a lawful command, striking his superior officer, and converting an Army vehicle was sentenced to 90 days’ jail with hard labour. Perkins drove the vehicle to a township 40 miles from the camp. He struck the n.c.o. who reported his action in taking the vehicle.

Indoor Basketball. In the Wairarapa Interhouse Association’s draw for Monday night’s indoor basketball, the game W.F.C.A. B v. McKenzie's, at 7.18 p.m., was omitted. Basketball Contests.

Tonight’s attraction at the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium will be thrilling basketball contests, commencing at 7.30 p.m. Teams of visiting Marines will compete.

Home Nursing Classes. Home nursing classes conducted by the Country Districts Red Cross Society Sub-Centre will commence in the W.D.F.U. Room, King Street. Those wishing to enrol should be present at 1.15 p.m. on May 12. Trotting Appeal.

T. H. Gunning, who was disqualified on April 26 by the New Zealand Trotting Association for five years for alleged corrupt practices in the running of the horse Premier Royal, owned by Mr B. C. Lee, Timaru, has appealed to the New Zealand Trotting Conference against the association’s decision. Indoor Bowls.

The Indoor Bowling Club will hold a progressive pairs competition on Monday next. Players are asked to be present promptly at 7 p.m., so that an early start can be made. Owing to most members having prior engagements, the usual championship events will not be held this season.

Deputation to Cabinet. Introduced by Mr Perry, M.L.C., a deputation from the R.S.A. yesterday discussed with Cabinet Ministers a revised pension scale, different aspects of rehabilitation, and associated problems. The Prime Minister, Mr Nash, Mr Semple, and Mi’ Barclay were the Ministers present, and the Repatriation Board and State Advances Corporation were also represented. Interhouse Dance. The dance held in the Masonic Hall, Masterton, last night, by the Wairarapa Interhouse Association was largely attended and proved most successful. A Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by Miss A. McKenzie and A.C.2 A. Frood. Miss R. Kemp contributed vocal items. The music was supplied by Mrs Ashton’s orchestra, and Messrs L. Askew and J. Bruce were M’s.C. Supper was served by the Interhouse girls. ; Conviction Entered. After a retirement of 2 hours 23 minutes yesterday, the jury in’ the Supreme Court, Wellington, convicted William Alexander Crossan, boot repairer, aged 44, of rendering a woman incapable of resistance by threats with the object of committing a crime, of [abducting her and of intimidating her with a revolver. They acquitted him of being a rogue and a vagabond in that he was found in possession of a revolver with felonious intent'. He was remanded for sentence till the close of the session. N.Z.E.F. Association. A statement issued by the Dominion headquarters of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. Association last night says: “After a two-day conference of the Dominion executives and members of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. Association, held in Wellington, representative delegates waited on the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and Mr Nash. Various urgently needed amendments to the Pensions Act and practical suggestions for carrying into effect the ideals expressed in the Rehabilitation Act were presented. A full discussion followed on housing, land settlement, purchase of businesses, and Merchant Navy problems, when the association’s proposals and policy were propounded.” The Dominion president, Mr E. L. Thwaites, stated that he felt sure that, following the conference, many of the anomalies experienced by returned service men would be speedily remedied and that rehabilitation of service men would more closely approximate the wishes of Cabinet.
