WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
SOLWAY-M ANAIA MEETING. COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the SolwayManaia Women’s Institute was held in the Epiphany Hall yesterday. Mrs Munn presided and welcomed a large number of members and friends. Three new members were welcomed by the president. Mrs Scrivener was appointed delegate to attend the conference at Gisborne in July.
Mrs Woollett submitted a report on the council meeting held at Carterton and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and presented with a shoulder spray.
Mrs Mannell (Opaki Women’s Institute) displayed a number of articles made from sugar bags. They were greatly admired and she was thanked and presented with a posy. A report of the address by Madame Chiang Kai-shek to the American Congress was read by Mrs Munn. The roll call, “Something from Another Land,” .was well responded to and some beautiful articles were shown.
The competitions resulted as follows: — Cooking:— Shortbread: Mrs Hickling, 1; Mrs Butler, 2; Mrs Diamond. 3. Best bloom (small): Mrs Webber, 1; Mrs M. Mullen, 2; Mrs McAlister, 3. Best bloom (large): Mrs Catton, 1; Mrs S. Allen, 2; Mrs Torrance, 3. Chrysanthemum (3 blooms): Mrs Munn, 1; Mrs Smith, 2; Mrs Catton, 3. Sewing:—Flour bag handkerchief: .Mrs Torrance, 1; Mrs Carr, 2; Mrs Hickling, .3. Mesdames Barnes, Bannister, R. Allen, Colway and Butler will be the hostesses at the June meeting.
