DESPERATE FIGHTING

IN NORTHERN CHINA. STRATEGIC TOWN LOST TO INVADERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 5. The Chinese troops, fighting desperately in defence of their strongholds in the Taihang Mountains, killed almost 2000 Japanese in a fierce battle in south-eastern Shansi Province, says the Chungking correspondent of the United Press of America. The Chinese, however, were forced to yield a strategic centre to the invaders, abandoning the rural town of Tunyaotsi after all its buildings had been destroyed by an enemy air and artillery bombardment.
