Mr A. J. Murray has been reappointed a member of the Marlborough Land Board.
Cable advice has been received that Mr W. M. Sellar, of Masterton, has received his commission in the Royal Air Force.
Mr P. McDonald, president of the Greymouth branch of the National Party, has been selected as candidate for Westland for the next election. Mr and Mrs W. Preston, Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, and Mrs W. Preston, Junr., Raupo, North Auckland, are spending a holiday in the Wairarapa, and have been the guests of Mr H. Preston, Pownall Street, Masterton. Misses M. Moran, K. Moran and Y. Wills, of Pahiatua, who are on the nursing staff of the Palmerston North hospital, have been successful in passing their third year nurses’ examination.
The annual report of the Masterton Methodist Church Ladies’ Guild states that special thanks are due to Miss Jackson, who has been a faithful and conscientious worker, and who has been always ready to render any service necessary for the welfare of the Guild or the church. Appreciation of the work of Mrs Speight (pianist) and Mrs Madsen (tea convenor) is expressed in the report. All members who assisted the Guild during the year are also thanked.
The appointment of Mr N. J. Paltridge, with the honorary rank of captain, as representative of the National Patriotic Fund Board in Tonga, was announced after a meeting of the standing committee yesterday, a Press Association message reports. An Aucklander, Mr Paltridge has had managerial experience in business and for two and a half years was with the Y.M.C.A. on war service. For the past eighteen months he has been assistant to the National Secretary. The funeral of the late Mr F. W. Parry took place at the Masterton Cemetery yesterday afternoon, there being a representative attendance of mourners from all parts of the district. The Rev. D. McNeur conducted the service at the mortuary chapel and also at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Trooper R. Eccles (Greytown), and Messrs H. Mackenzie Douglas, A. E. Prentice (Wairarapa R.S.A.), B. Kingdon, J. Allen (Wellington), L. Matthews and E. J. Brown. Among those present were Mr J. Robertson, M.P., E. W. Cheetham (Mauriceville County Council), N. Lee (Wairarapa Hospital Board), Major A. L. Hibbs, D.C.M., and Captain R. Lee (Home Guard), G. Brown (Wairarapa Power Board) and F. Goggin (Eketahuna R.S.A.). Many beautiful wreaths, testifying to the respect and esteem in which the deceased was held, were laid upon the grave. These included emblems from the Mauriceville County Council, Eketahuna R.S.A., Senior Officers Zone 7B Home Guard, Wairarapa Hospital Board, Kaiparoro Guides and Home Guard, Dalgety and Co., Ltd., and D. Ryan and Sons, Ltd. (Eketahuna).
