SOVIET THRUST IN KUBAN THREAT TO NOVOROSSISK. RED AIR FORCE STRIKING HARD. LONDON, May 5. The Russian offensive in the Kuban is gaining momentum and fighting is reported along most of the front. The attack is developing northeast of the Black Sea port of Novorossisk, where a battle is now raging. The Russians have reached a point overlooking Novorossisk, which is under the fire of Soviet artillery and is being constantly bombed from the air. There are constant air battles over the lines, in which the Russians have the upper' hand. The Russians are using Flying Fortresses to pound enemy keypoints along which the Germans are sending supplies and men to the central front. Thousands of British and American bombers and fighters have been added to the Red air fleet.
The Moscow radio announced that long-range Soviet bombers on May 1 and 2 made mass raids on the railway junctions of Gomel, Minsk, Orsha and Bryansk, in the German rear, scoring hits on crowded troop trains and also on ammunition and fuel dumps and causing large fires.
