METHODIST CHURCH

WOMEN’S AUXILIARY.

WORK AMONG THE MAORIS. *

The monthly meeting of the Women’s Missionary Auxiliary of the Masterton Methodist Church was held • yesterday afternoon when Miss E. G. Beale presided over a large attendance of ladies. After afternoon tea had been served ' by Mesdames R. Keltie and H. Speight, Miss Beale welcomed Sister Ivy Jones of Auckland.

Sister Jones in her address referred to her work as a city deaconess among the Maoris living and working in and around Auckland. A description was given of a new club room which had been recently opened for Maori girls, where meals could be obtained and games played, while there was a meeting room in which church services, etc., could be held. The general health of the Maoris was now greatly improved owing to their growing confidence in European health methods, said the speaker. More Maoris were visiting the clinics for treatment. One of the Maori deaconesses was organising a Girl Guide company and others were carrying out various activities in the interests of the Maori race. Maori girls and men were now earning high wages in essential industries. The speaker went on to describe her work in the law courts and her social work among the Maori girls and service men.

A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the speaker.
