EXCELLENT WORK
ACHIEVED BV ST. MATTHEW’S PARISHIONERS FUND FOR NEW CHURCH. ANNUAL MEETING HELD LAST NIGHT. There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of parishioners of St. Matthew’s Parish held last night in the Parish Hall. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich, who presided, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, paid a tribute to the way members of the church had faced the problems caused by the earthquake and said that great work had been done. Mr J. Ninncs, people’s . churchwarden, in seconding the motion, referred to- the activities of the Ladies’ Guild, Fireside Circle and other organisations. All parishioners had given yeoman support and it was wondei’ful that the parish had such a good credit balance. Mr H. A. R. Dunderdale, hon. treasurer, gave an interesting survey of the financial position. A comprehensive review of the position regarding the proposed new church was given by the Archdeacon. Many parishioners took part in the discussion which followed. It was agreed that at least £9OOO would have to be in hand before building began and .that a sustained effort should be macle as soon as possible to raise the sum required. Several suggestions were referred to the Plans Committee for consideration. Keen appreciation was expressed oi the action of the trustees of the Orange Lodge in placing their building at the disposal of the parish on Sunday mornings for Sunday School purposes. Officers were elected as follow:— Vicar’s warden, Mr P. G. Ramsay; people’s warden, Mr J. Ninnes; vestry, Messrs R. W. Brooks, V. H. Heath, W. L Hunter, G. Hyde, J. F. Jaine, A. O. Jones, C. R. Mabson, A. H. Marsh, J. R. Russell and W. E. Vowell; hon. auditors, Messrs G. W. Sellar and N. H. James. " Following the meeting supper was served by the wives of vestrymen. Mr Ninnes referred to the good work of the Rev. I. C. Edwards during his year on the staff of the parish, and wished him and his wife every happiness in their new work at Pahiatua, and on behalf of parishioners made a presentation to him. Mr Edwards, in thanking parishioners, said that his stay in Masterton had been very happy and he would remember it always. ___
