HEAVY LOSSES

INFLICTED ON JAPANESE IN NORTH CHINA ENEMY FORCES TAKEN IN REAR. EFFECTIVE USE OF RESERVES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) CHUNGKING, April 28. Japanese attacks along the Taihan mountain range show signs of weakening, as the Chinese forces are successfully counter-attacking, says a Chinese communique. The Chinese, while resisting frontal attacks, kept a portion of their troops in previously arranged positions and attacked from the rear as the enemy advanced. The Chinese, in counter-attacks west of the mountains, inflicted heavy losses. In another sector the Chinese forced a Japanese column of 4,000 men to retreat. A third enemy column is trapped and facing imminent annihilation. The Associated Press reports that American fighiers shot down ten Japanese planes of a force of 40 which attacked Kunming.
