JUVENILE CRIME

PREVALENCE AMONG MAORIS. COURT EXPRESSES CONCERN. “The Court expresses its concern at the prevalence of juvenile delinquency amongst the Maori race,” observed Mr E. G. Eton, J.P., in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court this morning, when three Maori juveniles appeared before him and Mr L. J. Taylor, J.P., two on charges of unlawful conversion of a motor car and one on a charge of the theft of £lO. The youths were remanded to a sitting of the Chliclren’s Court on May 6, and in the meantime they were placed under the supervision of the Child Welfare Officer. Mr Eton said that he did not know what the native race was coming to. In the past they had been looked on with respect but the present trend of juvenile deliquency amongst the race was becoming shocking. Senior Sergeant C. Murphy said that the youths charged were not local Maoris.
