PRELUDE TO BATTLE

ON THE EASTERN FRONT

SKIRMISHES ON MAIN SECTORS. INTENSIVE ATTACKS BY RED AIR FORCE. LONDON, April 28. Ou the Russian front local skirmishes are reported on all the main sectors. Most of these are clashes between reconnaissance groups. The intensity of the Russian air attacks suggests that the Germans are trying to bring up large reinforcements for the coming battle. Neither side is giving anything away, but it is obvious that something is maturing.

The Moscow correspondent of “The Times” an earlier message reports, says that the Russians in the Taman Peninsula have undoubtedly wrested air ascendancy from the Luftwaffe. The Germans used the latest types of planes in considerable numbers in an attempt to smash the Russians’ land movements and interrupt their supply lines, but the Red Air Force brought up reinforcements, beat off the Luftwaffe and heavily bombed German troops. Reuter’s Moscow correspondent says that Russian guns in the Kuban are laying down a persistent barrage on defence points the Germans have built up in depth between Novorossisk, Krymskaya and the Kuban River, Both sides seem to be preparing to renew the more active land battle.
