FIERCE FIGHTING
DONE BY FIRST ARMY IN DIFFICULT MOUNTAIN COUNTRY. NO SCOPE FOR SWEEPING ) MOVEMENTS. A (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 27. “Because it has not fallen to Lieut.G eneral Anderson’s First Army to fight famous battles with several divisions in the line, the belief seems to., have spread that it has little battle experience in comparison with the Eighth Army,” says the “Daily Mail’s” corres-pondent-on the central Tunisian front. “The fact is that the First Army has done some of the fiercest fighting of the whole war, but, because of the geographical configuration of Tunisia, the fighting has been on a small scale.
“’The mountainous nature of the ground makes it impossible to carry cut sweeping movements similar to the desert warfare, so the enemy has generally stood firm and fought hard.” .
