Deer stalkers in the Tararua Ranges came across a very big slip on the hill side well back in the hills. It had blocked the flow of water in the Maungateretere Stream that takes its source in the mountains. For some time the water from the watershed could not get away freely and eventually broke through the slip. This is presumed to be the reason for the floods in the stream that feeds the Taratahi water race and which during the dry spell could not be accounted for.
