Beat Swept Out to Sea.

Swept out to sea in a flat-bottomed fishing boat at the mouth of the Waimakariri River at about 3 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, Stanley Sherwood Roberts, a single man, aged 40, residing in Christchurch, is presumed to have lost his life. The river was in flood at the time and a heavy sea was running. Mr Roberts was paying out a fishing net from the boat to others on the shore. A rope in the net broke and the boat was carried out to sea.

The winners of the Monte Carlo waltz competition at the Masterton Odd Fellows’ dance on Saturday night were J. Fargher and Mr C. Hansen. It is intended to hold another series of dances in the near future.
