OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
RABBITS AND DUCKS (To the Editor.) Sir, —Today I received a permit from the Department of Agriculture to purchase shot gun cartridges. On presenting this at the W.F.C.A. Ltd., I was unable to procure any, although they had a stock on hand. I was informed their supply was only for use by those with a licence to shoot ducks. Well, Sir, as the rabbit pest is very serious in our district, I required the cartridges for the purpose of shooting rabbits. The Government is asking for increased production, but if the rabbits are not kept down the production of meat and wool will suffer next year. These men who have time to spend on duck shooting should have time to spend in shooting rabbits; or go overseas and do some shooting.—-Yours, etc., J. BANNISTER. Te Apiti, April 27.
MASTERTON STREET TRAFFIC
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—While our “City Fathers” are considering what should be done regarding the width of Queen Street, the traffic conditions in that street become more chaotic. During Wednesday and Thursday last the traffic conditions were appalling, and it was only by the exercise of extreme care by motorists that accidents did not occur. The use of Queen Street by military lorries and tanks of all types, for through traffic and parking purposes, is one that should receive immediate attention by the authorities concerned. Will the military authorities be responsible for damage caused to the street surfaces by their vehicles? Our streets are second to none in New Zealand, and have been paid for by the. ratepayers and motorists of Masterton. We hear a great deal about the shortage of shipping space, petrol and rubber —in one instance recently there were parked in Chapel Street six military six-wheeled motor vehicles, obviously not being used for military purposes, but the local Zoning Committee, I understand, propose to restrict the delivery of meat by the local butchers to two deliveries a week. These are questions that are giving a great deal of concern to many residents of Masterton, motorists and others alike. Thanking you for allowing me space to draw attention to these matters. —I am, etc., “MOTORIST.” Masterton, April 27.
