REDWOOD MEMORIAL SHIELD.

CONTEST AT HASTINGS

The annual conference and competitions of the Federated Catholic Clubs and Societies, North Island District, were held at Hastings during Easter. The competition was for the Frances Redwood Memorial Shield and included debate, oratory, elocution, religious questions and impromptu speech and also billiards and tennis. Ten teams took part in the competitions this year and the standard was very high. The Wellington University Catholic Students were the winners of this year’s competitions and the St Patrick’s College Old Boys, Wellington, were the runners up. The members of the Masterton Catholic Club’s team which took part in the competitions were: —Messrs J. J. Connors," G. Marsh, W. C. Orange, J. J. Sutherland, Pte. P. Greenlees and Misses Norah Doyle and B. Reilly. The election of officers of the executive of the Federated Catholic Clubs and Societies, North Island District, resulted as follows: —President, Mr W. C. Orange, Masterton; vicepresident, Mr James Connors, Masterton; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. F. McDonald, Masterton; committee, Messrs D. B. Curry, J. J. Sutherland, W. Brady, J. Curry, Masterton; Marcus St. B. James, Hamilton; Mrs J. Murphy, Wellington; Misses Evelyn O’Donoghue, Hastings, and M. Diggins, Masterton.
