Mrs W. R. Blennerhassett, of Auckland, is visiting Masterton and is staying at Braeburn. The Rev. I. Edwards, of Masterton. will take up duties as acting-vicar at the Pahiatua Anglican Church on Sunday, May 2. Among New Zealand soldiers who are included in a second exchange of prisoners and repatriated from Italy, disembarking at Alexandria, is Private Charles Rex Walker, of Carterton.
The engagement is announced of Dorothy Jean, youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs 'James McGovern, “Mahoe,” Mauriceville, to Norman, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Hartley Myers, “Stoney Creek,” Mauriceville. The engagement is announced of. Patrine, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Cecil van Praagh, “Burnside,” Essex Street, Masterton, to Q.M. Sgt. John A. Brockweyer, U.S.M.C., adopted son of Mr and Mrs J. C. Green, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A, Pte. J. F. Walker, writing to members of the Carterton Football Club from overseas, says he is fit and well and that there is no chance of any football where he is, there being no suitable football ground.. He had met a few Wairarapa players, including “Rus” Howard (Red Star), Wally Petersofi (Red Star), Sid Pye (Red Star) . and Ron Cleland.
Mrs Catherine Cummings, wife of Mr D. J. Cummings, Commissioner of Police, died yesterday at Kelburn, Wellington. Mrs Cummings was born and educated in Adelaide. She came to New Zealand in 1899, and was married in 1905. She leaves, in addition to her husband, a son and two daughters —Miss Eileen Cummings, Wellington; Mr Ray Cummings, farmer, Putaruru; and Mrs .Pat Parker, Rissington, Hawke’s Bay. Her mother died recently at the age of 94 years. Mrs Cummings had many friends in all parts of New Zealand, particularly the towns wher.e she had lived: Wellington, Christchurch, Napier, Hastings, Rotorua and Masterton. Mrs Cummings took a keen interest in Catholic activities and charities.
