JAPANESE TRICKERY

LIES RADIOED TO FORTRESS PILOT. ENGAGED IN BOMBING RABAUL. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Japanese endeavour to exploit trickery in the air as well as on the ground. When a Flying Fortress was over Rabaul, New Britain, a few days ago, its radio frequency was interrupted by a Japanese, who said, in perfect English: “Your landing gear has been shot away and your plane is badly damaged. You have no chance of getting back, so you had better make a forced landing and give yourself up. You will be well treated.” The American pilot had.been running the gauntlet of anti-aircraft fire for more than an hour, and just as he dropped his bombs on the target he replied to the Japanese: “You will have to bring your lunch and stick around for a long time before you will have a chance of getting me.” He returned to his base and made a perfect landing. His landing gear, of course, was intact.
