IN WAR AGAINST U=BOATS
SHIP-BASED HELICOPTERS. AS PATROLS IN ATLANTIC GAP. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 21. Ship-based helicopters may patrol the 500 miles gap in Mid-Atlantic where U-boats are taking their heaviest toll. Revealing this, the Navy Department explained that the gap thus far could not be patrolled from Britain or from American shores. However, helicopters can be used, because they can take off from the deck of a merchantman, hover in. mid-air . over a submarine and easily follow its evolutions.
