Lorry Falls Into River.

Crashing through the railings of the Hutt Pipe Bridge about 6.30 p.m. yesterday, a lorry of the type which mixes concrete as it travels fell into the Hutt River, but neither of the occupants of its cab was injured seriously. The vehicle, which was being driven toward Petone, ran off the bridge after colliding with a taxi cab going in the opposite direction at the eastern end of the bridge. The lorry fell on its side in about six feet of water, and the window by the driver’s seat being open and just awash, the two men inside were able to scramble out' and were rowed ashore. The taxi cab was damaged by the collision, but its driver was unhurt. Boy Injured by Explosion. Injuries to his eyes were received by Peter McLatchie, aged 14, through the explosion on a bombing range near an east coast town used by the Royal New Zealand Air Force of a small practice bomb he had picked up. The boy was brought to Wellington by air yesterday for medical treatment. A similar accident occurred about six months ago, and warning notices were prominently placed around the edges of the bombing range, which is a danger area. The boy had entered the range with a companion at a point where a warning notice stood, and the two boys actually passed a second notice when crossing to the target area on the range, which was not being used at the time.

Shooting Season Prospects. There will bo a short shooting season from May 1 to May 16 inclusive in the Wellington society’s district this year for water-fowl (including swan, duck and pukeko), but it will provide three weekends for shooting. For imported game (pheasants, hares and quail) the society’s season will extend from May 1 to July 31, a period of three months. All the 1941 regulations will apply. Duck-shooters may take a maximum of 90 birds in three weeks, but those in search of imported game are restricted to a maximum of 52 in 13 weeks. “I do not think that shooters have had such a prospect for years. They are so keen now that they are thinking of May 1 and nothing else,” said Mr E. G. Wiffin, secretary to the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. He pointed out that overseas service men who were in New Zealand would not be entitled to take protected game without a licence, or they would definitely be regarded as poachers, and be liable to penalties as such.
