FOOD EXECUTIVE
APPOINTED IN AUSTRALIA. POWERS TO DEAL DRASTICALLY WITH RACKETEERS (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, April 16. A Federal Cabinet food executive has been formed to be the supreme food controlling body in Australia. This executive will have full power to deal drastically with food racketeers and to commandeer or freeze commodities being withheld from the war effort by producers. The members of the executive are: Mr Seasley, Minister of Supply; Mr Chifley, Treasurer; Mr Scully, Minister of Commerce; and Mr Dedman. Minister of War Organisation. The officers of the executive are: Mr F. W. Bulcock, Director-General of Agriculture, and Mr F. A. de Vis, Controller of Defence Foodstuffs. One object in establishing the food executive is to have a body with statutory powers backed by the present food council, which functions in an advisory capacity. Because the food council did not have power to deal with racketeers, there are reported to have been rackets in primary products urgently needed by the Government for the fighting forces.
